Wireless access points work over a specific channel.
If you live in a place with lots of access points. (think of neighbours)
Your reception and speed could seriously suffer from interference with other access points.
Even when you're real close to your airport.
The way to resolve this is to make sure you work on a different channel than your neighbours.
You can use iStumbler to make a scan of the accesspoints in your neighbourhood .
Once you know the channels your neighbours are using you should adjust the settings on your airport.
Setup your airport to work on a channel that is at least 2 numbers higher or lower than the one from your neighbours.
And your wireless will perform a lot better.
