Check your spelling in multiple languages.

If you like me have to write emails and documents in more than one language you may find that the OS X spelling checker underlines all words that are written in another language than your main language.
There is an easy way to overcome this, as Mac OS X can check the spelling of multiple languages simultaneously.

In any application that supports spelling check do the following:

Select from the top menu Edit->Spelling and Grammar->Show Spelling and Grammar or press [][:] on your keyboard.

Then just change the selected language in the drop down menu to "multilingual".

Keep your Macbook awake!

Caffeine is a small application that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Ever had the experience when your Macbook keeps on talking and all your menu items appear double like this? Great chance you accidently enabled Voiceover for your Mac. Move to a new Macbook (or Macbook Pro) the easy way.

There is a real easy way to switch to your new hardware when you've bought a new Macbook or Macbook pro.
No need to import data from your old machine, just your setup exactly as you had it before.

Here is how to achieve it step by step.

Update your OS to the latest version available by choosing "Software Update" from the Apple menu and when done close all applications.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner .
Switch on your new Macbook while holding down the T key.
Now connect your old and your new machine to each other using a firewire cable.
Start Carbon Copy Cloner and select your old Macbook as the source and the new Macbook as the target and start the clone. (this could take a while depending on the amount of data that needs to be transferred)

When it's done you can startup your new Macbook and it will be configured as an exact replica of your old machine.

* Note: This is not possible when moving from PowerPC (like iBook and Powerbook) to Intel proccessor (Macbook).
From PowerPC to PowerPC or Intel to Intel works great!

How to write to NTFS formatted disks under OS X.

A great tool came out which makes it possible to mount any kind of disk over any kind of protocol in OS X.
For instance you can directly read and write to NTFS formated disks, FTP servers or SSH servers.
The NTFS format (better known as the Windows format) is probably the most interesting for most people.

Here is how:

Download and Install Macfuse .
Download and Install the NTFS-3G Plugin
Optionnally install the GUI for Macfuse called MacFusion to make it easier to mount SSH and FTP disks.

Master your Macbook with Quicksilver.

Working with the mouse and especially the trackpad isn't a very efficient way of working, not to mention the risk of RSI.
Hotkeys are way faster, but it's hard to remember them all.
This is where Quicksilver comes in. It has become an essential application for me.
To start of, it can quickly launch any application or open a folder or a file with just a few keystrokes.
But in addition to that there is a wide variety of plugins available to make it do much more. Also some nice interface plugins are available.

How to show weeknumbers in iCal.

I like iCal but one feature is still missing in it. There doesn't seem to be a way to show weeknumbers in it. Luckily there is an easy workaround for it, a norwegian geek has made a calendar which shows al the weeknumbers up to the year 2013. Just click here and ad the calendar to your iCal. Tag it:

A fun game for your Macbook Motion Sensor.

Wally Bally is a basic game for MacBooks running on Leopard. It uses the accelerometer motion censors allowing you to physically tilt your MacBook and bounce a ball. The objective of the game is to hit the walls whenever they are green to get points. Hitting a red wall results in loosing one of three lives.
